Lion Dawn
Welcome to Lion Dawn, a realistic lion Role-Playing Game. Please take a look around and bear with us as we continue to build and finish this site.

Season: Summer
Weather: Oppressive heat beats down upon the land, baking the savannah's soil into dry, hard-packed dirt. Many prides are now located near the closest watering hole due to lack of water in their usual hunting grounds, though this is a normal occurence for this season. Prey, too, is often drawn to a water source, and therefore few lions have the opportunity to go hungry. In short, life is fairly good: most hours of the day can be spent lazing about and napping, and the newest members of each pride often can be seen exploring their new world.
Breeding: No
Land Creation: No

Lion Dawn Rules

Administrator’s Note: It is extremely important that you at least try to read all of this, if you can. Everything below is key to how you will be RPing the lions on this site, because we are providing behavioral expectation and information on lions so that you can better understand how you will RP them. If you do something out of context, like send your male lion on a hunt or claim a pride by yourself, we already know that you clearly haven’t read these rules.
I know it’s a lot, but I’d really appreciate it if you at least scan through it and pick out the more important details. It’s essential if you plan on RPing here.

General OOC (Out Of Character) Rules
-Please be generally polite, courteous, supportive, and patient with your fellow members.
-Do not use foul language. IC, mild language such as “hell” and “d**n” are allowed (though not always smiled upon when you use them frequently or OOC) as well as made-up curses.
-Do not post inappropriate concepts. (Pornography, racism, sexism, sexual preference-ism, sexual content, adult themes in general, etc.)
-We require all posts must be 150 words each as a minimum. Failure to do so will result in either a warning if your post is from 149-75 words or deletion of your post if it’s 74-0 words. Remember that OOC does not count towards your overall word score.
-Do not post one-word posts anywhere or purely OOC posts in an IC board. (Except when bumping inactive threads)
-Please keep chatspeak to a minimum. True, even your dear administrators may use it occasionally, but we don’t use it in excess. If you’re having trouble with this, try “Haha!” instead of “LOL!”, etc.

Character Creation
-Please be as realistic as possible when creating your character. If you have any unusual colors, etc., please PM a staff member and inquire about them.
-Coat colors include the VERY rare albino, light tan, light rust/reddish, tawny, golden, brown, etc. Fur markings are generally rare, though scars are common.
-Eye colors can be gold, brown, black, green, amber, or yellow.
-Please, no jewelery, tatoos, or oddly shaped scars.

Hierarchy and Roles
-Leaders: Male brotherhood formed before start of pride. There is no leader among this group: all brother lions share. Also, there is no “alpha female”. Male lions do not hunt: their duties involve fighting for territory, fathering cubs, scent-marking, and sleeping.
-Lionesses: Lionesses hunt and patrol, and are generally more active than the males. They share babysitting duties for the cubs in a precise schedule. Usually, they are all related in some way.
-Adolescent Males: Adolescent males can still contribute to the hunt because their manes have not fully grown yet and therefore do not hinder them. However, they have to be on edge because the leaders often interpret them as a threat and chase them off, in which case they must fight or run. Usually, males leave the pride at this age to either form their own brotherhood or wander.
-Adolescent Females: Adolescent females are beginning to become part of the lionesses and start having short babysitting roles or hunt small prey.
-Cubs: Cubs enjoy exploring and wandering off, though their parents don’t like this. They learn hunting from their mothers or various aunts/female cousins.

Starting a Pride
-Lion brotherhoods run the pride, but they form together before taking one over. (Note that they are probably not actually brothers)
-Lion brotherhoods are groups of two or three male lions. (You may play them all or be part of one with other RPers)
-Brotherhoods are formed at Zimbarr Cliff.
-In order to take over a pride, your lion brotherhood must post a challenge in the pride of choice. There, you will fight the current males in charge of the pride, even if they outnumber you/you outnumber them.
-You may also choose to start a pride yourself. You still must have a set brotherhood. You all will apply to an administrator, who will judge your application and either accept it or deny it. They will make you your boards once you send them this form:
Name of Pride:
Description of Territory:
RPing Example: (One for each lion!)
-Females are either stolen from another pride or join the pride of their own accord. They are perfectly free to leave a pride whenever they want, though they usually don’t want. It’s unusual for a single female to leave as the pride she lives in is made up of her relatives, but she can choose to.
-If a takeover is successful, males must become wanderers. They can try to take back their pride in the future if they want, but they must have obviously improved fighting/RPing wise.
-A takeover results in the victorious males becoming leader, being in charge of the complete pride (anyone may, of course, go with the former leaders, but generally they are regarded with contempt after a fight), and have the responsibility of killing off the cubs with the other males’ genes to rid them completely from the pride.
-If you DO NOT want your cub killed/to kill the cubs, you must work this out between yourself and the male lion/the cub OOC, depending on who you play. You can arrange some sort of deal between the two of you or have the cub leave the pride unawares.

Fighting
Taking Over A Pride
-Lion brothers approach the camp of the other pride and challenge the current leaders. At that stage, only the males may fight, as is tradition.
-Each fight must be two posts for each person part of the fight. There should be NO other posts from bystanders. This means each topic should be between eight-twelve posts depending on the size of the brotherhoods.
-At the beginning of each fight, please post the following form:
Pride Challenged: (Name of the pride)
Challenged By: (All lions making the challenge)
Being Challenged: (Current male leaders of the challenged pride)
-An administrator will judge the fight and post the results in the fight topic. They will judge each brotherhood as if it is one person, so if someone has been breaking the rules/RPing badly, that will count against their overall score.
Border Fights
-Border fights occur when trespassers from another pride cross into pride territory. This means that they post in another pride’s boards, but DO NOT challenge the lead males.
-Lionesses or lions may fight, as opposed to a challenge when only the males may do so. Generally, lionesses hunt/patrol together, so they usually overwhelm any intruders and can be extremely aggressive.
-Border fights are not judged, though they should not go on forever. You are responsible for sensibly ending the conflicts.
Stealing Territory
-In order to steal territory, a male lion must wake up, first of all, and walk into another pride’s land. (They cannot, however, steal camps)
-A male lion leader must put forth a four-line riddle. (You must PM a staff member the answer, who will judge the question!) The leaders/first leader to get there has a week to reply with an answer. It is suggested that you consult with your fellow brother lions before replying, though you may not ask anyone else if they know the answer.

Hunting and Eating
-Lionesses do all of the hunting as the male lion’s mane prevents him from doing so. (It restricts his movement slightly, but it’s that slight gap that counts when chasing fast animals) Adolescent males occasionally hunt too.
-Lions usually have a system of ambush while hunting. They are not the fastest of creatures, and can keep up a sprint of about 58 kilometers per hour for about a hundred yards, so lionesses surround a herd, isolate a member, and chase it towards another lioness. If she fails to kill it, another will stop the animal when it attempts to go in a different direction.
-The following can be killed on one’s own:
-Warthogs
-Gazelles
-Various small rodents
-Small birds
-Lizards/snakes
-Fish (if you can get them!)
-Groups can take down:
-Water buffalo (do NOT try this on your own)
-Wildebeest
-Zebra
-Various gazelles
-Lions do not eat other carnivores in general.
-Male lions demand the first go at the kill. The brotherhood of leaders will even attack the lioness who has brought down the animal if she refuses to relinquish it. Males are bigger than females, and tradition and natural build demands that they get what they want.
-No one eats while the leaders are eating, because their aggression is very high at the kill site and they can be provoked to injure or even kill a lioness who gets near. Cubs, however, can get close because they carry the male lion’s genes and therefore he will not harm them.
-Adolescent males occasionally challenge their elders by attempting to take some, which can later on lead to a fight.
-The other members of the pride eat when the male is finished.

Stealing
-Lions may choose to build their pride by stealing warriors. (Females, not males, that would be a bit scary and the males don’t want that competition anyway) They also may occasionally choose to steal cubs, though it is extremely rare.
-If the lioness wants to join the other pride, she is free to leave without the riddle being answered. If the stealing is successful, she is also free to go back to her original pride if she wants to, but the male may come back and attempt to steal her again if this occurs. (Again, PLEASE don’t have this go on forever. You can negotiate)
-You cannot steal females currently caring for cubs.
-In order to steal, you must have a “post off.” First, you must make the post indicating that you are going to steal, and then the challenged, who has this right, will make a setting and a time. For example, the person may say that you both are caught in a rainstorm/flash flood, or merely relaxing, and you both must post those situations once in your best RPing. Judges decide who wins or loses—the winner keeps the lioness in his pride.

Mating
Note that this section has been altered from what actually happens in real life more so than the other sections to make it easier for RPers. All other sections are generally based on lions in real life, but the mating section is different for your comfort.
-Mating may occur during spring and autumn.
-Male lions have a seasonal mate, so each breeding season they choose a different lioness. They indicate that they are interested IC, not via PM (though you can of course warn people IC that you are going to propose to their character) by, well, walking up and asking them.
-Mating for all prides takes place in Felasca Island.
-Graphic mating is allowed to some extent, but you will be warned if it is getting too intense and will be asked to stop by an administrator. If your mating becomes graphic, please edit the topic title with X-X-X. (Idea credited from Sonnet of the Wild) You are expected to be sensible and straightforward with this.
-As opposed to real lion life, mating will only occur once in order to impregnate a female (it takes three days in real life!)
-Mating by force is not allowed. Generally, the lioness has really little say when a male asks her, as one of her responsibilities as a pride member is to mate with one or more of the males, but if she strongly objects it is not unusual for any lioness to attack their over-eager mate.
-You cannot breed for pleasure.
-Please DO NOT post in another person’s mating topic if you’re not taking part. It’s only the polite thing.
